Medicare Entitlement

Active full-time employees who reach Medicare eligibility age of 65 can apply for Medicare Part A, but you do not need to enroll in Part B while you are still an active employee. Your current health insurance remains in effect until you retire. Employees who become entitled to or lose their Medicaid may be eligible to make benefit changes.

Entitlement to or Loss of Eligibility for Medicaid:

  • If an employee or the employee's dependent becomes entitled to or loses eligibility for Medicaid, they may be able to make changes to their benefit plans.
  • Contact your Human Resources Department to confirm eligibility and determine what can be changed based on your specific situation.
  • Changes must be reported within 30 days of the eligibility change. You may add or drop medical, dental, or vision coverage for yourself or the applicable family member. You may also elect to change your medical FSA amount. You will need to complete the appropriate forms and provide a copy of the notification letter from Medicaid.

Entitlement to Medicare:

Active full-time union and non-union employees who are over age 65 do not need to enroll in Medicare if they are still active. Active employees can apply for Medicare Part A when they turn 65, but Part B is only required at retirement. Employees who are at least age 65 when they retire will need to apply for Medicare Parts A and B within 60 days of their planned retirement date.
