Name-Brand Drugs: Refers to the drugs that have been patented or are still under patents.
 
National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC): The organization that assists the insurance departments of states and helps to draft legislation.
 
National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA): Refers to the private, not-for-profit organization that is governed by employers, government, or healthcare consumers. It also accredits health insurance plans and proposes performance measures.
 
National Drug Code (NDC): The national classification system used to identify drugs and is similar to the UPC, Universal Product Code.
 
Net Loss Ratio: Refers to the result of total claims of liability and includes expenses that are then divided by premiums.
 
Network: The system of contracted hospitals, clinicians, and ancillary staff that provides healthcare to the network's members.
 
 
 
 
Network Model HMO: Refers to a health insurance plan that contracts with multiple doctor groups. The physicians work out of their own practices but may share costs and may not provide care to managed care members exclusively.
 
Non-Contributory: Situation where a sponsor of a health plan prays the entire premium cost. Employees will not contribute to the premium.
 
Non-Participating Provider (non-par): A healthcare provider that does not contract with an insurer or health plans. Non-par providers will bill patients without any balance billing limits. Also known as an out-of-network provider.
